    Puna CDP application process reopened

    The County of Hawai‘i Planning Department has reopened the application acceptance period for the Puna Community Development Plan Action Committee. The deadline to submit an application is 4:30 p.m., September 4, 2009.

    Anyone that has previously submitted an application through the Planning Department or the Mayor’s Office do not need to resubmit their application. Applications can be downloaded at www.punacdp.info or picked up at the Planning Department, 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 3, Hilo.

    Nine volunteers are being sought by the County of Hawaii Planning Department to serve on the Puna Community Development Plan Action Committee. The Action Committee will serve as a proactive, community based steward of the plan’s implementation and update.

    Volunteers who serve on the Puna Community Development Plan Action Committee will be asked to attend monthly meetings, meet with supporting partners, participate in training workshops and or retreats, help organize and attend public involvement meetings, workshops and or charettes, and serve as a source for promoting and sharing information about the Puna Community Development Plan with individuals and community groups.

    Interested persons will be required to submit an application to the Planning Department. From the total pool of applications submitted since the initial application acceptance period began in October 2008, a sufficient number will be selected using pre-determined selection criteria to be interviewed by an Applicant Review Committee. The review committee will recommend nine applicants for appointment to the Action Committee. The nine nominees shall then be approved by the Planning Director and referred to the Mayor for appointment and confirmed by the County Council.

    “We want community-minded individuals who can bring a wealth of knowledge, have a positive attitude and are willing to share their skills and life experiences with others,” said Larry Brown, Puna CDP Project Manager.)

    The Puna Community Development Plan was the first of six plans initiated by the County of Hawaii Planning Department, as prescribed by the General Plan, to be adopted by ordinance. The General Plan is an broad planning document for the Island of Hawaii, while the Community Development Plans are district specific, allowing for more detailed planning efforts and ongoing community involvement.

  • Hurricane Felicia

    Mayor is briefed on Hurricane Felicia

    Mayor Billy Kenoi was briefed on Hurricane Felicia at the Hawai’i County Civil Defense headquarters and reminded County of Hawai’i residents to always be vigilant and prepared in hurricane season.

    Hurricane Felicia was about 1,700 miles East-Southeast of the Island of Hawai’i. The hurricane is forecasted to lose strength as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands, but Mayor Kenoi urged residents to review their contingency plans and check their Family Disaster Supplies kit.

    Those disaster supplies should include a First-Aid kit, any special medicines that are needed, flashlights and batteries, a portable radio, drinking water and five to seven days of non-perishable foods.

    Updates on Hurricane Felicia and tips on being prepared in hurricane season are posted at the Civil Defense Web site at http://co.hawaii.hi.us/cd/index.htm

    “Residents need to have a plan, need to know where the nearest shelter is and should always be prepared in hurricane season,” Mayor Kenoi said. “County, State and Federal officials will be closely monitoring Hurricane Felicia, and will provide regular updates for the public.”

  • Hawaii - Federal Tax Credit

    Breaking News: Tax Credit Can Be Used on Closing Costs. Call Me For Details! 

    FHA-approved lenders were recently given the green light to develop bridge-loan products that would allow first-time buyers (anyone who has not owned a home in the last three years) to use the benefits of the federal tax credit "upfront."


    Under these HUD developments and guidance, FHA-approved lenders can develop bridge loans that buyers can use in different ways. Most notably, you could use it to help cover closing costs, possibly buy down your interest rate, or even offer more than the minimum 3.5 percent down, which would allow you to make a stronger offer—a key strategy in some markets where first time buyers are competing with investors in specific price ranges.


    Note: HUD officials indicate that the loans can't be used to cover the required minimum 3.5 percent down, only to supplement the down payment. In addition to this new development, there remain many state, local and nonprofit lender resources and programs for buyers needing help with the 3.5 percent downpayment. (Call me to see which resources you might qualify for) 


    These new developments, combined with the (up to) $8,000 tax credit and the historically low prices and still low mortgage rates, make this an opportune time to buy. The tax credit is only good through 2009, so now is the time to take advantage and not get caught in the crunch toward the end of the year when procrastinating buyers will scramble to buy before the tax credit expires.
